How much does an Adelaide bathroom renovation cost?

Are you planning on doing some home improvements and wondering how much your bathroom renovation will cost?

The cost depends on the amount of work you plan to get done, but expect to pay:

• $5,000 to $20,000 for a ‘bathroom makeover’ – a spruce up which may involve repainting and new taps, shower screen, toilet and vanity

• $20,000 to $30,000 for a complete renovation with new tiling and plumbing

• $35,000 + for a luxury renovation, which can include underfloor heating, moving your walls and top of the range tiles and fittings

What influences a bathroom renovation cost?

While the average bathroom renovation costs between $20,000 to $35,000, there are a few factors that will help you work out how much your project will be.

The first factor is of course the amount of work involved, also known as the labour costs. Jobs like painting and replacing shower screens and vanities are relatively straightforward, whereas changing the layout of the bathroom completely requires a much greater investment.

The materials used also play a part. Quality of tiles and fixtures vary greatly, so if you need to keep costs down you can use budget materials that are durable but have the same appearance as high quality tiles and fixtures.

The size of the bathroom also has some influence in the final cost.

How much will your renovation cost?

With so many variables, there’s a type of bathroom renovation for every budget. We like to split them into three levels:

A bathroom makeover – $5,000 to $10,000

A bathroom makeover is a largely cosmetic renovation. You will keep all your plumbing and electrics in place but may swap out some items such as your toilet, shower screen and vanity, and have the bathroom repainted. Any new fixtures or tiling will be of standard design.

A standard renovation – $15,000 to $25,00

This is the renovation most people choose and includes small changes to your layout (and subsequent plumbing and electrics) as well as upgrading your tiling and fixtures. This size project allows for higher quality, non-standard features such as a semi-frameless or frameless shower screen, a larger or fancier freestanding bathtub, and more expensive tiles to improve the overall look and feel.

A luxury renovation – $30,000 +

A budget over $30,000 allows you to give your bathroom a complete overhaul. You will be able to make major structural changes such as moving walls, and install high-end features like underfloor heating and heated towel rails. Toilets, showers, vanities and bathtubs can all be very high quality, and you will be able to use porcelain tiles in the $60 per square metre range.

How to budget for your bathroom renovation

As you can see, there are lot of factors that go into renovating a bathroom. Once you have decided on the level of renovation you want, it still takes a lot of work getting quotes from individual suppliers and tradespeople to calculate costs, and each of these will be subject to change depending on the work they will find that they need to do.

The safest way to get an accurate cost estimate ahead of time is to work with a complete renovation service. Not only will they manage the entire project for you, but you can be confident of the price range beforehand so you don’t find your budget gets blown out.
